Game Ideas

March 16, 2010 Leave a comment

Our task was to come up with a game in our pairs and to make a trailer for it.

Here are mine and Joel’s ideas for our first game.

Game Idea;

  • To be aimed at kids
  • aimed at religious people

Name;

  • Jumping with Jesus
  • Bible books in one
  • Interactive Christianity
  • The Bible Game

We chose the name ‘The Bible Game‘ as it was simple and gets to the point of what our game is about.

Consoles;

  • Nintendo DS/i
  • Nintendo Wii
  • Project Natal (Xbox 360)
  •  PS3

Content;

Interactive levels based on notable Bible stories (eg. Noah and the Ark, Parting of the Red Sea etc.)

Music;

  • Uplifting melodies for background music tied in with digetic environment noises.
  • Playful sound effects

Characters;

  • Bible characters (e.g Noah, Jesus, Moses, Abraham)
  •  Animals

After discussing what our game would be about, we then had to set about making a trailer for it.  We thought of ways how we could do this as our idea was going to have the game in an animation context.  As neither of us can create animation pictures, we think this could be very difficult.

We then decided it was maybe better to have a different idea and Joel had the idea of taking the game ‘Heavy Rain’ and a particular part in it where a man is looking after a baby. We had the idea of changing our target audience to those of an older generation and have an interactive game where you have a child, then watch it grow up whilst taking part in a numerous amount of activities with them as they grow.  We both liked this idea and below you will see the trailer for it.

It will be played on mainly the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles.  We had yet to decide on a name of our game and also we need to think of character names.

Rockstar’s partnership with Amazon.com

GTA IV Release:

  • Amazon.com partnered up with Rockstar to be the games official retailer.
  • Rockstar allowed Amazon.com to be the initial retailer of the special edition version of the game.
    Special editon included:
    - Art book
    - CD Soundtrack
    - Exclusive Rockstar keychain with a safety deposit
    - A limited edition Rockstar duffel bag

  • Rockstar also allowed Amazon.com to sell songs from the in-game radio stations by texting a services number on the in-game cell phone. This allows players to get the information of the song that is being played sent to their e-mail address. They could then order the song off Amazon’s website
  • Rockstar replaced Amazon.com with iTunes for their music database with their release of their first expansion pack.

Sound in TV Drama

October 22, 2009 1 comment

The music used at the beginning of every Hollyoaks episode is very upbeat and lively which mimics the quick cuts and fast actions shown by the characters. The movement and cuts shown match with the beat of the music for added effect.
There is no digetic sound used in the opening credits which in a way denotes from the sense of realism the show produces.
The opening sound is a perfect fit for a teen drama as it is very positive and upbeat.

Holby City

October 12, 2009 1 comment

This clip starts off with mid shots between two characters showing their conversation clearly. You can tell straight away who there by the uniforms, the lady being a nurse and the man being her boss. There are a lot of mid shots continuously throughout this clip as Holby City is focused highly on conversation and interaction between characters. There are very few close ups due to body language playing a higher role than facial expression. There are also no extra wide shots that set the scene due to them wanting the viewer to be more involved in the show and to reduce the feeling of being a spectator.

Pride and Prejudice -> Mise en Scene

September 28, 2009 1 comment

The intro shows cloth with needles and thread on it – a main hobby for women in that period of time.
It then goes on to show two men on horses in a field in the countryside. The setting of the TV show is a huge aspect of how they created such an emphatic mise en scene. Far away from anything that could be determined ‘modern’, the countryside was a perfect filming location due to the fact that it was exactly where the wealthy resided.
The chateau shown is relative to the period of time this drama is set in. The clothing, decoration, accents and the interaction between characters adds to the already-perfect mise on scene produced.

Period drama’s are the most difficult in terms of perfecting mise en scene, but when done correctly they produce ana amazing overall picture as seen in Pride & Prejudice.

Viewing Figures

September 24, 2009 1 comment
  1. NEW TRICKS (THU 2100) 8.53 – Drama
  2. EASTENDERS (THU 1929) 8.33 - Drama
  3. EASTENDERS (FRI 2000) 8.17 – Drama
  4. EASTENDERS (MON 1958) 7.52 – Drama
  5. WAKING THE DEAD (SUN 2100) 6.86 – Drama
    (Viewings from September 6th 2009)

As you can see, Drama’s dominate the ratings. This, I believe, is for three main reasons.

  • People can easily relate to characters and events, especially with drama’s such as Eastenders which depicts ‘normal’ people with ‘normal’ lifestyles (Although the story lines are dramatically dramatized)
  • The time in which these drama’s are televised is known as the ‘prime time’ – When the most amount of people are watching television on a daily basis. This is usually from 6pm til 10pm.
  • These drama shows set out their series to get the most from the potential audience. For example: If a person misses an episode they miss out on a chunk of the answers that are given about characters lives and the plot of the series. Each epidsode always has a minimal amount of questions answered but always has more and more questions which hooks viewers and forces them to watch the next episode.
